Museum, Tiddler and Bing Time

November 6 2014

We're not over familiar with Maisy, but along with Nick Sharratt, Lucy Cousins seems to be Linus' favourite illustrator. I found a few different Maisy books in a pound shop, so not only are the books good fun they were a bargain too! Tonight we kicked off with Maisy Goes To The Museum. Linus likes following the story on the pictures as well as hearing me read. I like this one as it is a modern museum in the story, there aren't too many books that actually involve day to day events.

I'm sure I'll be reading some of the others in the series, that we have. The link below takes you to Amazon, I can't guarantee it will be £1 (it probably won't). Poundland seem to get the best occasional selection of some good, up to date books, just don't get in there before me!

Tiddler The Story Telling Fish is another by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. We picked this one up at the library. The library is a nice addition to our reading, it's also a good place to pick up some that we end up buying and others that we don't. I can't think of any off hand but there have been one or two that I thought would be better. Mostly ones with an over use of poo seem to disappoint, but I digress. I love the rhythm of this one, there's lots of little characters and a great flow. It's a proper story too, which is not always the case. I think I might be right in saying this is the only Axel Scheffler book I've seen without a squirrel.

I'd like to say that I knew about Ted Dewan's Bing well before we watched the excellent CBeebies series but it's not true. This book is a little over ten years old, it's a short story but there's a lot in the pictures and plenty to interact with. At the end of the book there's a kind of flow chart with a series of pictures asking how you do bed time. The pictures are potty, bath, pyjamas, toothbrush, bed, books, etc. I've asked Linus several times when we've read in the past how he does bed time but tonight was the first time he picked the order himself. I do try and get something new out of each time we read so it's always a joy when it filters through.
